Scenario 1 Boot from external media

Situation where the BIOS is locked boot from external drives - it is not uncommon. Whether it is done for security reasons or other reasons are not so important. It is important that GRUB can help us overcome this barrier. The following describes the sequence of actions that will allow us to boot from a USB drive.
  1. We make a bootable USB flash drive in any way, for example, using unetbootin.
  2. Insert the stick and turn on the computer.
  3. Screen appears, wait until grub (sometimes in order to have time to catch it, it is necessary to keep the Shift).
  4. Send us a list of boot options.
  5. Press c and enter the interactive mode.
  6. Now you want to specify the media to be loaded. Usually (hd0) - a native hard disk and flash drive is (hd1). Figure out how to be called the flash drive in your case, it is easy just by experience.
Anyway, enter: root (hd1) for GRUB Legacy or set root = (hd1) to GRUB2
  7. Please pass control to boot on the specified disk: chainloader +1
  8. boot! boot
If you did everything correctly, the result is you have successfully booted from his stick, despite the ban in the BIOS. Empirically I found out that the method does not work if your motherboard can not boot from usb or not polls devices at every boot (as, for example, on my eee PC when the Boot Booster).
Lyrical digression: this method I managed to try one of the terminal classes of our university, where the company stood at dualbute vinda with Linux. The beauty of the case that the faculty server exported / home via NFS and terminalka that was entered in the allowed subnets. As a result, I managed to read the user home directories for the server and go so unnoticed by anyone.
