Broken link between the car and tires
Researchers from the University Rutzhersa and the University of Southern California conducted a successful experiment on the interception of information, which comes from the RFID-sensor tire pressure to the central driving. Moreover, they found that information can substitute for and submit to the central computer information about the run-flat wheels (if the instrument panel start blinking red lights, confusing the driver).

The method works in two stages. First, the receiver reads the unique 32-bit identifier to each RFID sensors on the tires. Then it becomes possible to substitute the signal that comes from these sensors to a central computer. Substitution is possible at a distance of 40 meters from the car.

To the surprise of researchers, they found that the controller is the pressure in the tires on some vehicles can cause damage if feeding him a specially-chosen impossible data "about the pressure, and the performance is not restored even after a reboot.

The problem is that such a wireless system to inform about the tire pressure according to the law necessarily installed on all new cars in the U.S. since 2008 (in Europe, a similar law will be effective from 2012). So that potentially every new machine is vulnerable.

The good side is that each tire manufacturer supplying receivers from own production (they cost about $ 1500 each), so one way you can not crawl all the cars on the road.

In addition, researchers are sensitive to the lack of authentication and every kind of protection in such systems. They say that this is the first implementation of technology, where the developers have tried at least make a working system, and only then think about security.

The researchers also note that the present form of wireless technology is the identification of tires is ideal for creating a database of cars with the organization of the universal tracking system on a national scale. Perhaps for this very purpose, and pass a law for mandatory installation of RFID on all new cars.

The results of their work, researchers will present 12 August 2010 at a conference USENIX Security '10.
